In March 2016, the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) honored Mr. Martinez as the recipient of the AADR’s 2016 Honorary Membership. Honorary membership is bestowed each year by the unanimous recommendation of the three most recent living Past Presidents of the Association and approved by Council. Such Honorary Members shall have all the rights and privileges of membership. An Honorary Member Is selected on the basis the candidate’s significant contributions to dental research.

In March 2013, San Diego Union-Tribune honored Mr. Martinez with its San Diego Latino Champions Award, “Civic Leader of the Year.”
In December 2011, San Diego Business Journal also named Mr. Martinez “Most Admired CEO, Non-profit Organization/Large.”
In October 2011, the San Diego Business Journal honored Mr. Martinez with its “Health Care Champions Award,” – Health Care Management.
In October 2009, the San Diego Union-Tribune featured Mr. Martinez’ perspective on health care reform. He was one of five medical and insurance executives at Union-Tribune Editorial Roundtable. Mr. Martinez was the only executive of San Diego’s community health center delivery system asked to participate in a five-part discussion series published daily in the newspaper.
Mr. Martinez has been recognized by San Diego Magazine as one of the “Top50 People to Watch in 2005,” and again in 2009. This recognition is bestowed upon key decision-makers who have a strong and positive impact on the community.
In 2005, Mr. Martinez was selected by President George W. Bush to serve on the Advisory Committee for the 2005 White House Conference on Aging. He was one of only 22 public health advocates nationwide selected to offer insight and direction of the conference proceedings entitled, “The Booming Dynamics of Aging: From Awareness to Action.”
In 2002, Mr. Martinez was one of five experts asked to participate in the first ever U.S. Senate hearing before the Senate Health, Education, and Labor & Pensions Committee’s Public Health Subcommittee on “The Crisis in Children’s Dental Health: A Silent Epidemic.” Martinez has convened national and regional leaders specializing in Latino Health, Latina Health and Adolescent Health at annual SYHC sponsored health conferences.
